Sony Music tried to change ‘my sound’ – Davido

Davido, whose ‘IF’ is currently the biggest song in the country has opened up about the song being a success, while also revealing that Sony Music tried to change his sound, as they tried to and make him see that he wouldn’t catch the attention of the Western world with his African sound.
However, Omo Baba Olowo (O.B.O) as the singer is fondly called explained that he pleaded with them, believing that music is universal and the foreign fans surely will warm up to his sound.

He also use American R&B singer Omarion to prove his point, as he shares a video of the ‘Post to be’ crooner grooving to his song ‘IF’ on Instagram. “The bro Omarion feeling da ‘IF’ vibes! All last year, they tried to change my sound… saying staying true to my culture wouldn’t work for me outside Africa! This year I fought and pleaded for ‘them’ to allow me make the music I know how to make and now see what’s happened! Music aint got a language! Now I got the biggest song in Africa once again! Thank to Jah!” Davido wrote on his Twitter page.

The new work has the imprint of Pana singer, Tekno, with the hallmarks of what made Davido ruled the airwave and demanded that everyone bow to his music. Davido and Tekno worked hard together to create the perfect wavy sound to sit right at the heart of the tempo and sound motif that Lagos and all its surrounding cities are basking in. The drop-stop drum kick, combined with meandering pop synths, and intermittent supply of horns obviously makes one feel like heaven.

The Ekuro singer in January 2015 made headlines when he announced on social media that he had inked a deal with Sony Music Entertainment. The popstar also received an endorsement from Sony Music’s RCA Records, home to the pop act, Taylor Swift.

With ‘IF’ currently topping music charts across Nigeria, one could still say Sony is right, and Omarion vibing to the singer’s ‘IF’ is not enough to justify his stance on the issue of re-tuning his sound for his music to penetrate outside Africa. Wizkid may well be a case in hand.

The Caro singer, who is equally Sony Music signed up act since the past year has been embracing other sounds outside the Afrobeat genre. He has been seen in his recent catalog of songs, for instance Caribbean vibes, which has been a major element in his music. This was affirmed with his Wine to the top with Jamaican singer Vybz Kartel, one song that has continued to generate applause and acceptance.

According some music critics, Davido, will have to prove beyond doubt to the global entertainment outfit that staying true to his cultural influences would be the best strategy for his music being accepted both within and outside African shores especially.
