The historic city of Ogbomoso is preparing to host what many describe as West Africa’s most ambitious cycling event — the Gran Fondo Ogbomoso (GFO) — scheduled for December 18, 2025.
Billed as a 160km endurance ride, the event is expected to attract professional cyclists, enthusiasts, and adventure lovers from across Nigeria and beyond. Organisers say GFO is more than a race; it is “a cultural, sporting, and economic experience” that could redefine Nigeria’s place on the global cycling calendar.
Cycling Meets Culture
What sets the Ogbomoso event apart, according to stakeholders, is its fusion of sports and culture. Riders will pass through heritage landmarks, cheered on by local communities. “Every pedal stroke tells a story of Ogbomoso’s identity and hospitality,” said the organisers.
Building a Cycling Ecosystem
Analysts note that while cycling has grown steadily in Nigeria, the region has lacked a flagship event comparable to Europe’s famous tours. GFO aims to fill that gap by creating a platform that promotes fitness, community engagement, and youth development.
The event also promises to deliver economic benefits, with hotels, transport operators, and local businesses expected to cash in on the influx of visitors.
Towards an African Peloton
Sports observers say GFO has the potential to become the Tour de France of West Africa. With proper consistency and branding, the organisers believe the event could soon attract global attention and establish Nigeria as a major hub for endurance cycling.
The Bigger Picture
The long-term goal, according to TED Media, the organisers, is to inspire more young Africans to embrace cycling, promote sports tourism, and showcase Ogbomoso as a destination for both athletes and adventure seekers.
“Gran Fondo Ogbomoso is where sports, culture, and tourism meet,” the organisers stated. “This is the future of cycling in West Africa.”
